ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

The Knowledge Nook is designed to develop literacy skills in pre-school-age children while providing an inviting space to practice important skills like taking turns, making a friend, and sitting quietly to read a book.  Fundamental concepts are introduced through creative interaction with letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. 

For Educators

English Language Arts Goal
The goal for students in English language arts (ELA) is to:
Read
Understand complex, grade-level texts
Express their understanding of those texts through writing and speaking.

LEARNING BY DOING

Toddler Activities

  • Talk or sing about the pictures
  • Count out as pages are turned 
  • Use learning manipulatives to build fine motor and cognitive skills

Preschooler Activities

 

·         Read books focusing on letters, words, and punctuation.
·         Make up stories, and drawings to go with books.
·         Identify authors and illustrators of books.

Elementary Activities

  • Use word identification strategies with the greater facility to unlock unknown words.

  • Use common letter patterns and critical features to spell words

  • Identify an increasing number of words by sight
